Get Healthy… Hop And Jump But Don’t Skip

Recently I have seen a lot of comments about skipping meals to lose weight. This comes from many low-calorie or fad diets say this is the way to lose weight fast but they wind up not working in the long term. You can lose weight on them but it’s unhealthy, and as soon as you go off the diet the weight comes pouring back on. If you are trying to benefit from a weight loss or body building program, good nutrition is an essential part along with exercise.

The latest thinking is that you want to eat smaller meals more often. If you do the math that means about every2-4 hours in order to increase your metabolism and maintain your lean muscle tissue. It is more important to eat properly than to skip meals.

You will slow your metabolism down and put body fat on by skipping the last meal of the day. As an example, if you eat dinner about 6:00 pm, go to bed at 11:00 pm, wake up at 7:00 am and eat breakfast at about 7:30 am. That’s thirteen and a half hours since your last meal. Your cells are craving nutrition and are going to want to store the next meal as fat instead of burning the calories as fuel.

On the other hand when you eat frequent meals throughout the day including before bed you continue to burn calories and fat even while you sleep, but it’s not from skipping the last meal of the day.

Your meal before bedtime is not as important as breakfast or post-workout, but still very important. Many people eat junk before bedtime and that's why many programs fail. Go for healthier choices instead of the junk.

It’s important to stay out of a catabolic state where muscle and tissue breakdown. You want to keep your metabolism rate high so you continue to burn calories and fat even while you sleep. That doesn’t happen when you skip meals. What will happen is your body goes into a catabolic state, and the next time you eat something your body will have a greater chance of storing it as fat. And that is the vicious cycle when you skip meals. Metabolism drops, lean muscle tissue drops, body fat increases.

Stay away from the foods with high sugar or fructose content, not just at bedtime either. Foods high in saturated and trans fats out also. The foods you want before bed should be healthy and slow to digest. Some protein foods would be casein protein, cottage cheese, low-fat cheeses, whey protein, and natural peanut butter. Healthy fats would be natural peanut butter, nuts, other natural nut butters, and seeds.

The best carbs are dark green leafy vegetables like spinach, broccoli, or kale. The lighter veggies like potatoes have too much starch. You can also try some complex carbohydrates like oats, or whole-wheat products, but calories can add up quickly so watch the portion size.

The key to eating before bed is moderation. You should never feel stuffed, and you should drink plenty of water with it. The water will actually help fill you up some and ensure you don’t go to bed dehydrated. The quantity depends on what you are trying to accomplish, and how well you have managed your calories throughout the day. For sure it should be one of the smallest in terms of calories.

When to eat before going to bed varies from person to person, but from 15 minutes to 90 minutes is a good rule of thumb. It will be a matter of preference really. Experiment with what works best. Everybody is different.

Don’t Over Enjoy The Holiday

June 21st officially ushered in Summer, and already it’s another holiday with more festivities. Yep, the 4th of July is here along with another temptation to over indulge with grilling out, hot dogs, chips, burgers, beer, apple pie, and it’s all good. Well … except for the extra calories and, maybe, the extra weight we pick up and may need to lose after the weekend.

Keeping up with my exercise routine is necessary for managing my weight over the summer but even if I get off schedule, I don’t sweat it. We all gain weight at times and, if I’m careful, I can shave those pounds off again with intelligent exercise.
When I’m having a picnic or a party, I try to plan some activities to get us moving. A flag football or basketball game, tossing a frisbee, playing volleyball or swimming are all great ways to have fun while moving around.

Never fear, there are some easy things we can do to benefit from healthy lifestyle choices while still enjoying the summer. When I belly up to the picnic table it's tempting to eat everything in sight, but I can avoid going crazy if I:

Munch on fruits, veggies or other healthy choices before going after the fatty foods. I’ll bring my own to share at the picnic. This way I eat less of the junk foods, but still save room to “sample” them.

Splurge on the things reserved for holidays like homemade ice cream or apple pie. I try to gravitate away from the chips, crackers and other snacks I can get any time.
Once I fill the plate, I migrate somewhere away from the food. Many of us graze mindlessly if there's food nearby, so get what you need, eat slowly and give yourself plenty of time (20 minutes) to feel full so you don't go back for seconds or thirds. Using a smaller plate is also a trick I use to cut down on my portions.

The ice cold brews are another opportunity to moderate, especially when it's hot outside. Unfortunately, alcohol can add more calories to your waistline than you might think. It can also dehydrate you, which is riskier if it's hot outside. Try drinking a glass of water between beverages.

Many of us go all day without eating in anticipation of a party, but if you show up starving, you're much more likely to overeat. Eat small, healthy meals or maybe a protein bar before you go so you can make better choices and avoid temptation.

Making choices that benefit my health doesn’t mean I can't have any fun. Holidays are a time to enjoy yourself and by doing it reasonably, I make the holiday guilt-free.

10 Things We Did To Lose Weight

It’s time to unveil the new and improved physiques that we have been working on over the past 6 months. For many of us it has been a difficult project, while others seemed to have it made from the start.

I read somewhere that the US spends over $30 billion a year on diet products and programs. Almost everything you read has articles by so called experts, and even medical doctors promote one diet scheme or another. Weight loss supplements like Acai Berry are also is high demand. The net result is that most people simply don't know who or what to believe.

Achieving your ideal weight level is important because excess weight is known to be a risk factor in diabetes, hypertension, heart problems and arthritis. Keep in mind that no matter what the reason for trimming down (peer pressure, sports, or just looking good) there is a danger of dropping too much weight.

When you decide on a goal, if you lose too much weight it might also cause health problems. Search out a BMI calculator online to determine what a healthy range is for you.

Here is a summary of what many experts believe are safe, effective, medically approved weight loss techniques:

- Keep a count of and reduce the calories which you consume and increase your daily exercise to around 30 minutes.

- Cut out, or reduce simple carbohydrates and eat complex carbs like wild rice, beans and nuts.

- Get more fruits and veggies in your diet, which are low in total calories and high in essential nutrients.

- Eat smaller meals more often to avoid becoming hungry. You can eat 5 or 6 small meals instead of 3 larger ones.

- Limit junk foods that you already know are bad for you, like sodas, desserts and ice cream.

- Replace high fat salad dressing and sauces with lemon, lime, salsa, soy sauce, or spices.

- The simple answer from the “experts” for to losing weight is that you need to expend more calories than you consume by cutting calories and getting more exercise.

- Slow and steady wins the race. If you go on a crash diet to cut calories immediately, your body will have difficulty with the sudden drop. Reduce your high calorie foods gradually and this will avoid unwelcome metabolic surprises.

- Drink plenty of water and be sure to get out doors for sunshine and fresh air. Get as much as possible of your nutrients from raw fruit sources or veggie based smoothies and salads.

- It is not a good idea to eat a big meal just before sleeping either in the daytime or at night. The calories tend to be stored as fat while you are sleeping.

There are some excellent supplements and eating plans available online which incorporate these principles.

How much water should I be drinking?

I have had some people ask about how much water is enough so the quick answer is, Government guidelines say 8 glasses of water a day, but your height, weight and the size of the glass all make a difference.

Most people urinate an average of 1.5 liter a day and you lose another liter of liquid through breathing and sweating.
You get about 20% of your water every day through food, so a general rule is to drink 2 liters of water a day. This is the equivalent to a large bottle of soda, or three and a half pints.

If you're feeling thirsty you're already dehydrated so don't wait until you need a drink, sip small amounts throughout the day to keep yourself hydrated. Factors, such as exercise, weather, illness, or if you're pregnant or breastfeeding all make a difference in how much you need to increase your water intake. The best way to know is to listen to your body.

You can get a certain amount of water from tea, coffee and carbonated drinks but they're all what are called diuretics, which make you go to the bathroom more, as well as increase the amount of water your body uses. They also don't quench your thirst like water does either. That doesn't mean you can't drink them, tea has other health benefits, but it just means that you'll have to drink more water as well.

If you're worried you're not drinking enough, measure how much you're drinking for a few days to see if it's anywhere near the minimum amount. Check how often you go to the bathroom, and your urine color. If it's pale and clear then you're drinking a healthy amount. If it's dark yellow and cloudy you might be dehydrated or not drinking enough.

I hope this helps.

Naturally, Water is Healthy for Your Body!

Who hasn't heard that you should drink more water. I certainly have, but I also have a hard time getting through a recommended amount every day. I realize that almost two thirds of my body is made up of water, and if I don’t replenish what I lose I start to suffer.

Government guidelines say we should drink at least eight glasses a day and some nutritionists claim that up to 80% of us are walking around dehydrated! This lack of fluid could affect your health, your weight and even your job so here is why you need it to stay healthy.

Water helps with weight loss.

Water naturally reduces your appetite. Many people confuse feeling thirsty with feeling hungry so they eat when their body wants them to drink something. When you're dehydrated, fat cells become harder to break down and so if you’re trying to diet it’s a lot harder if you don't drink very much.

Water stops headaches and dizziness.

Don't reach for the aspirin right away, your headache could be a symptom of being dehydrated so drinking water should make it go away. Even tension headaches and dizziness, which can be brought on by fatigue can be cured or helped by drinking water. Fatigue is also a sign of dehydration.

Water clears your skin.

Yes drinking more water can be good for clear skin and it can also help the symptoms of acne. If you're skin is dry, drinking water will give it more moisture, and flush toxins out of your body, along with anything else that shouldn't be there, like dirt and bacteria.

It fights infections.

Drinking water can help fight infections all over your body, not only because it flushes out toxins but because when you're dehydrated you're more likely to catch a bug. This is especially true for getting rid of and preventing urine infections and kidney stones. Being well hydrated is also great for allergies and colds because it clears the airways. Even cold sores can be reduced by drinking more water because they tend to pop up in places where your skin is particularly dry.

It keeps you regular.

If you suffer from constipation or piles you may have been told to increase how much fiber you eat. This is definitely one way of getting rid of the problem but you'll need to drink more water for the fiber to work properly. Otherwise it could have the opposite effect and make things worse.

It makes you exercise better.

We all know to replace the fluids you lose when you sweat with water, but what might not be obvious is that your body works better and harder during your workout if you drink water.

It improves concentration.

Our brain is made of around 85% water, so if you get dehydrated it can affect your concentration and even your short-term memory. Where was I? Oh yeah, water has a particularly strong effect on your math skills, because lack of water causes your brain's energy levels to decrease.

It boosts your energy.

In the same way that not drinking enough water makes your brain slow down it has the same effect on your body.
Assuming your muscles are around 75% water, your bones are about 22% and your blood is about 83% water. If you're dehydrated, all these body parts don't work as well as they should, and as a result, you lack energy and feel tired or lethargic.

It supports your heart.

Your heart is the hardest working muscle in your body, and needs a lot of water to keep it going efficiently. When you get dehydrated your blood gets thicker, and the heart has to work even harder. And if your heart is weak it can lead to more serious heart problems later in life. Personally I help this along daily with a 81 mg. aspirin each morning.
