Don’t Worry Happy Pills Make You Happy

Happy Pills by Brain Pharma are a mood enhancing blend for those stress filled days, where the apocalypse seems like a really good idea.

Happy Pills contain serotonin precursors that help put you in a better mood. This blend contains St. John’s Wort for anxiety and depression, N-Acetyl L-Tyrosine for brain function, caffeine for energy, B vitamins for stress and energy, and 5-HTP for mood support. All of which help to contribute to a higher emotional output.

This formula is designed to increase positive feelings, energy, and increase your metabolic rate to help further fat loss. Usually within a half an hour it gives a calming, relaxing, mood boost that comes on slowly like and wraps you like a soft blanket. It makes it much easier to deal with things like office bullies and unrealistic deadlines that would normally drive you up the cubicle wall.

On the downside it can increase sensitivity to sunlight/ UV rays. So, be careful before taking a couple before hitting the beach or tanning bed. If you have a sensitivity to caffeine take it with food or a snack of some kind but this is not for getting an energy shot. The caffeine in them is mostly offset by the other relaxing elements.

It’s a fairly fast acting formula, so it’s great for use on those days that catch you by surprise. It’s more suited for use at the office, when the kids seem out of control, or you are trying to be general manager of the universe and trying to get everything done.

So Don’t Worry … Be Happy! You can get them online HERE, and save an extra 5% by entering the coupon code vip5off when you check out.

A Daily Super Vitamin Pak

I am always reading what I find about vitamins, minerals and supplements, and I just came across an idea that I like a lot. In order to make sure that I have everything I need to stay healthy and in good condition.

I found a product by Beverly International called a Super Vitamin Pak. When looking at all the supplements and vitamins contained it seems like every cell in my body relies on some component of the Super Pak to function at peak levels. What also is neat is that they come in individual daily packets.

Beverly International is a brand that I trust and I use their products like Joint Care already. The Super-Pak contains just about all our vitamin needs in one packet, taking it once daily is much easier than opening multiple bottles. I would probably need around 10 different supplements to equal what is in each pack, or taking individual tablets with each meal.

Some of the vitamins they have are B-Complex and C, which provide optimum effectiveness all during the day and night, and are also associated with muscle growth. The antioxidant nutrients C, E, and Selenium are present in potencies that reduce the free radical barriers to muscle recuperation, repair and growth.

I get my supplements online, where I can find a large variety of nutritional supplements at extremely discounted prices. Check it out for yourself at Supplements To Go.
There is a coupon code I always use vip5off that allows me to get an extra benefit of 5%, which pretty much takes care of the shipping costs also. Try it for yourself!

That’s One Fine Tomato!

As I went out to water my tomato plants, I was reminded that they not only taste good, but are good for you too. I have been fixing more of the recepies in the Mediterranean Diet Cookbook that have tomatoes as one of the ingredients.

Tomato skins contain lycopene, which is a carotenoid known to block "bad" LDL cholesterol that can clog the arteries. The downside is that the body doesn’t absorb it real well.

That’s OK because I just read about a lycopene supplement that gets absorbed into the system much better.

In the United States studies have shown that daily lycopene supplementation can also play a positive role in safeguarding the prostate from damage caused by aging and diet, and may also contribute to healthy immune function and skin tone.

This is important to me especially because of a history of heart disease in the family. In addition to the medicines I take my doctor advised me to eat a diet that is rich in fresh fruit and vegetables.

In addition the British Heart Foundation is conducting additional research on a lycopene pill to fight high cholesterol. The preliminary findings were "very promising".

Dr Peter Coleman of The Stroke Association said: "We know that diets rich in antioxidants are beneficial in reducing the plaque build up and welcome the findings of this research."

Search HERE to check out one fine tomato … supplement. I recommend it!

Growth Hormones (HGH) May Help Aging Process

There has been a lot of talk recently about taking a Human Growth hormone supplement and what benefits it may produce. Human growth hormone, also called HGH has been used by Body Builders for a long time to assist in producing lean muscle tissue while reducing body fat. HGH was approved by the FDA in 1985.

Many studies have documented the positive effects of growth hormone when used properly. Schwartz Laboratories has created a homeopathic formula of human growth hormone mixed with key liver and pituitary extracts.

HGH peaks during your teens and then decreases. There is an 80% decline in HGH from age 21-61. Other hormones like DHEA, testosterone, estrogen and melatonin, also decrease with age.

In older adults between 45 and 86 randomized tests showed those taking the Schwartz HGH achieved a 10.8% decrease in body fat, 4% decrease in weight. In addition there was a 151.5% increase in insulin-like growth factor, which is an indicator of growth hormone secretion. This means that the HGH formula actually stimulated the subjects' natural production of human growth hormone.

The benefits of increasing Growth Hormone levels by supplementation include increased lean mass tissue, better memory, more strength and stamina, increased libido, stronger bones, regeneration of skin proteins and improved skin elasticity, lower blood pressure and body fat percentage. Some also reported an increase in hair growth.
Athletes in training recover and regenerate tissues quicker, and a better use of fat stores as an energy source. Human growth hormone has been studied extensively and usage is safe and extremely beneficial. This formula delivers a safe, legal, low dose which can be taken without a prescription and without injections. Just put 8-10 drops under the tongue three times a day.

There are generally 3 ways that HGH is administered: Injections, Homeopathic HGH (Oral Spray), and Herbal supplements which boost HGH levels

- Evidence from several reputable sources indicates that injectable HGH is effective in treating symptoms such a lethargy, weight retention and diminished sexual performance. There are, however, a few negatives to consider also. HGH is one of the most expensive medicines in the US, ranging from $30-100 per day. You can get it cheaper in China or Mexico but they are not FDA-approved and you may run into legal problems. Studies show that with injectable HGH there is increased risk of liver damage, edema (fluid retention), joint pain and breast development in males. A prescription required and most insurance will not pay for adult HGH therapy in any form.

- Homeopathic hgh is approved for over the counter sales.
You can find it online or at local drugstores. Although somewhat expensive as compared to nutritional supplements, their proponents argue that this is the best form to take hgh in.

- There is ongoing debate surrounding this but studies do show that herbal HGH stimulators do work to naturally stimulate the body's own production of Human Growth Hormone. With herbal supplements the herbs are taken, usually in capsule form, just prior to bedtime. The pituitary gland does its best work while we're sleeping.

The herbs contained are not habit forming and show little or no side effects. Herbal HGH supplements are much less expensive than injectable or spray HGH.

There are homeopathic products available online which contain chemicals akin to HGH along with herbal additives which are said to increase male vitality and up male testosterone levels considerably.

Schwartz Labs Growth Hormones benefit older adults, as well as many other segments of the population, including AIDS patients and the bodybuilding community.

Get Down On Triglycerides

Supplementing lab rats diet with lipoic acid had a significant effect in lowering triglycerides, which along with cholesterol levels and blood pressure are one of the key risk factors in cardiovascular disease.

A recent study found that lipoic acid lowered triglyceride levels up to 60 percent. If this holds true for humans, it would be a greater impact than found with other dietary supplements, and similar to the effects of some prescription drugs.

This study was just published in the Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics. , a professional journal. “The extent of triglyceride reduction was really dramatic, we didn’t expect it to be this profound.” Regis Moreau, an assistant professor with the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University said “The potential is good that this could become another way to lower blood triglycerides and help reduce the risk of atherosclerosis. It’s pretty exciting.”

Lipoic acid is a natural compound found at low levels in some foods, including red meat and green leafy vegetables. A powerful antioxidant, it’s been of considerable research interest in recent years for its apparent ability to reduce mitochondrial decay in cells and perhaps slow the process of aging. And it’s been used in Europe for decades as a treatment for the neuropathic complications of diabetes.

Until about 10 years ago, high blood levels of triglycerides, which is basically fat , were not thought to be as significant as cholesterol at predicting atherosclerosis and heart disease. That view has changed, and most experts now see triglycerides as a third important risk factor for atherosclerosis, along with levels of “good” HDL and “bad” LDL cholesterol.

In this research, it was found that supplements of lipoic acid appeared to affect triglyceride levels through two pathways. After eating, lipoic acid supplementation increased the rate of disappearance of triglycerides in the bloodstream. And supplements also reduced the genetic expression of enzymes in the liver that synthesize triglycerides.

Lipoic acid supplements have in various studies been shown to be an appetite suppressant, but control groups of laboratory animals were used in this research to ensure that lower triglyceride levels were not the result simply of less food intake.

The rats used in the experiment were obese to begin with, and developed higher triglyceride levels as the experiment proceeded and they aged – but the animals given lipoic acid fared much better. As they grew from five weeks of age to nine weeks, the blood triglyceride levels doubled in rats given the supplement, but went up more than 400 percent in the other group not given supplements.

The amount of lipoic acid supplementation used in these laboratory experiments would equate to about two grams per day for a 150-pound person, researchers said. Lipoic acid has been used by some people for years as a dietary supplement and found to be safe, Moreau said.

“We believe that a novel means of controlling triglyceridemia in this animal model has been revealed,” researchers wrote in their report. “Given its strong safety record, lipoic acid may have therapeutic applications for the treatment or prevention of hypertriglyceridemia and diabetic dyslipidemia in humans.”

Two Good Reasons Why Mom Gave You Cod Liver Oil

Docosahexaenoic acid or DHA is one of three omega-3 fatty acids with important health benefits. The others are eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and alpha linolenic acid (ALA). All body tissues contain more DHA than either EPA or ALA.

DHA is particularly abundant in the retina, brain and nerves. Omega-3 fatty acids are not stored in noticeable amounts in fat tissue, or produced inside the body from other fatty acids. This means you must get them from your diet. Therefore many researchers maintain that the best way to increase either DHA or EPA in plasma, tissues, and human milk, is to supplement with the one desired.

The retina has the highest levels of DHA of any cell type. They are particularly susceptible to the effects of aging, which include lowered levels of DHA and increased oxidative stress. By providing high levels of DHA, not only can vision be improved, but levels of protective NPD-1 are also increased.

DHA decrease as we get older, and a supplement to raise it is very desirable. Experts say that a deficiency of DHA is associated with age-related dementia and Alzheimer’s. New research suggests that supplementing with DHA may help reduce the buildup of plaque in Alzheimer’s patients.

For a long time it has been known that omega-3 helps with the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease. Omega 3 fatty acids reduce fasting and after meal triglyceride levels, decrease platelet and white blood cell reactivity, and may slightly decrease blood pressure. They also help maintain healthy blood vessel walls, inhibit irregular heartbeat and reduce fibrinogen, which forms the “mesh” in blood clots.

Cod Liver Oil is fish oil that is rich in nutrients like Vitamins A and D. It also has Omega-3 Fatty Acids, (EPA and DHA). This Cod Liver Oil is screened for impurities and is free of additives and preservatives. It also contains twice the Vitamin A and D as regular strength Cod Liver Oil Soft gels.

Try some and discover that mom was right after all.

How Are Your Joints?

If you have been having problems with your joints like I have you might like to try a product that I found. Beverly International's Joint Care can promote joint health. The main ingredients, Glucosamine, MSM, and Chondroitin have been proven to promote joint health and along with the other vitamins, minerals and essential oils has worked for my wife and me.

I have used a computer for years, and my wife has recently also been wondering if maybe she has arthritis I' have pain in my fingers in the joint by my finger nails and in my shoulders. I don’t know whether it is from overuse over the years but stretching helps. A friend of mine who is also a body builder is big on Beverly International supplements and recommended Joint Care.

Well we tried it and after a few weeks we both noticed that our hands and knees didn’t hurt as much. I’m not a doctor, and I don’t know whether you’ll get the same results, but Joint Care just might be what is helping to eliminate the pain in my fingers and shoulders after playing golf. That’s enough to make a believer out of me.

My wife says her hands don’t hurt as much either when she comes home from school. So I guess the bottom line is not to let joint pain keep you from enjoying all the relaxation activities you've worked so hard for.

Like Mikey says, Try It You’ll Like It.

Sugar Control Is Crucial

Keeping your blood glucose levels as close to normal as possible can be a lifesaver. Tight control can prevent or slow the progress of many complications of diabetes, giving you extra years of healthy, active life.
But tight control is not for everyone and it involves hard work.

Good control means getting as close to a normal (nondiabetic) blood glucose level as you safely can. What this means is to keep your levels between 70 and 130 mg/dl before meals, and less than 180 two hours after starting a meal, with a glycated hemoglobin level less than 7 percent. The target number for glycated hemoglobin will vary depending on the type of test your doctor's lab uses.

There is a supplement from NOW foods called Glucose Metabolic Support that contains a new dietary ingredient that is an extract from the herb Lagestroemia speciosa. The active component called GlucoTrim'™s is corosolic acid, has been the subject of scientific studies that demonstrates its ability to support healthy blood sugar levels by helping to transport glucose into the cells.

This tablet also includes an extract from the herb Gymnema sylvestre, a small plant native to India. Extracts of Gymnema have been used for centuries by Ayurvedic medical practitioners for support of blood sugar levels and natural insulin production.

Glucose Metabolic Support does not contain any sugar, salt, starch, yeast, wheat, gluten, corn, soy, milk, egg or preservatives.

Important, Niacin Without A Flush

Never fear, in the battle against cholesterol, there is flush-free niacin which helps overcome a hot flush effect for those who do not tolerate high doses of niacin very well.

When we eat too much it provides more energy (calories) than we need right away. The liver breaks down some the carbohydrates and protein and forms triglycerides (fat) and cholesterol. Because small LDL particles are the number one cause for heart disease in the U.S. is why we need to keep cholesterol under control.

One nutritional supplement reduces those triglycerides and bad (LDL) cholesterol and increases the good (HDL) cholesterol is niacin. You don’t even need a prescription for it, but it is always wise to check with your doctor.

Doctors have use niacin for years to reverse and control over coronary disease (plaque) and have found it an invaluable component in maintaining health. Did you know that Turkey meat is an excellent source of Niacin?

While it seems like a no-brainer to go out and stock up on niacin, it also can cause a hot flush that feels like when you get embarrassed. In high doses it occasionally causes more intense rashes. This has somewhat curbed the appeal of niacin, despite its unquestioned benefits.

It happens for about 10% of the population but if you drink enough water the other 90% do great. Some people struggle with this effect and no matter how hard they try cannot tolerate the feeling

NOW foods flush-free niacin formula contains Inositol Hexanicotinate which is a stable, non-flushing source of Niacin that is easy to assimilate and does work.

Watch Your Mouth … It Might Get You In Trouble

We hear a lot about proper nutrition, weight loss and exercise in taking care of ourselves if we have diabetes. But did you know your mouth can get you in trouble just as easy, if you don’t also take care of your oral hygiene?

It seems that gum disease and diabetes do not play well together. A study in the Journal of Periodontology found that poorly controlled type 2 diabetic patients are more likely to develop periodontal disease than well-controlled diabetics are.

If your sugars are high they permit germs to grow in your mouth, and this can lead to gum disease. If your gums get inflamed that can lead to insulin resistance, which in turn makes your blood sugar levels go high. The bottom line is that this trend needs to be stopped if you want to stay healthy.

So what we need to keep an eye on is any bleeding when you brush or floss, your teeth may seem longer or the roots may be exposed if you have receding gums. Another sign of infection is pus between the teeth and gums, or you may have loose teeth or cavities. If you already have gum disease, treatment with antibiotics can help reduce inflammation and lower blood sugar levels.

A little care goes a long way to help prevent or reduce the risks of gum disease. If you have any symptoms get to a dentist, and have regular exams every six months or so.

Brush and floss every day to remove bacteria and plaque from the hard to reach places between teeth and below the gumline. You might also consider a vitamin C supplement with antioxidants to help the immune system fight off infections and promote health.

As always work with your physician to keep your blood sugar under control.

Sunshine Vitamin C And Blood Pressure

Sixty-five percent of older adults in the United States have high blood pressure (above 140/90 mm Hg.) The treatment of high blood pressure is more than $24 billion each year, and affects the cost of healthcare for us all. This condition has grown to almost epidemic proportions all over the globe and disables many people every year.

There are things we can do to reduce our risks over the long term such as keeping our weight down, and eating a nutritional diet along with enough exercise.

Certain foods help maintain and control blood pressure like fiber, Fish Oil, soy foods & nuts. Now a new study printed online in the Nutrition Journal found that Vitamin C, known to help heart health in women and help stabilize heartbeats, may also help with blood pressure, even in healthy adults.

The researchers in this study looked at vitamin C blood levels and blood pressure in women 18-21 years of age with normal blood pressure over the course of 10 years. The women with Vitamin C levels in the top 25% were found to have lower systolic (top number) and diastolic (bottom number) than the lowest 25%. The actual differences were (112/69.8 vs 107.3/63.7 ).

These results led the authors of the study to suggest that Vitamin C “may be an important factor” in blood pressure regulation, even among healthy young adults.” In addition to the results from this recent study your immune system gets added support from Vitamin C, and Fish Oil is well known for its ability to help the heart and cardiovascular system.

Getting essential vitamins and minerals is important for a healthy diet. For many of us, our food choices do not always provide enough of the nutrients our bodies need, so adding dietary supplements into the daily routine has become a more popular way to get the nutrients our bodies need.

Seniors Need Zinc To Fight Infections

It has been known for a long time that as we age the amount of zinc that we get declines. It is also understood that Zinc is rich in antioxidants and plays a role in stabilizing cell membranes within the immune system. A recent study which was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that elderly people are more susceptible to infection, in part because they do not have enough zinc in their system.

This study of 50 seniors (ages 55 to 87) received either zinc gluconate supplements (providing 45 mg of elemental zinc per day) or a placebo for 12 months. In addition to tracking the incidence of infections, such as colds and flu, they also tracked the blood levels of immune cells, oxidative stress markers, and plasma concentrations of zinc.

The results were compared to a group of younger adults, and when the study started the older subjects had significantly lower blood levels of zinc, higher generation of inflammatory cells, and higher oxidative stress markers in their blood. Afterwards the researchers concluded that the number of infections, generation of inflammatory cells, and oxidative stress markers were significantly lower in the zinc supplement group than in the placebo group.

The author of the study, Dr. Prasad said. “Deficiency of zinc is very widespread in all ages throughout the world and may even be as prevalent as iron deficiency anemia, affecting nearly one billion people.”

He also noted that zinc inhibits copper absorption, and can cause anemia and bone-marrow suppression if taken long-term in large amounts without copper. People taking zinc more than a few weeks, with the exception of those with Wilson’s disease, should also take a copper supplement providing 2 or 3 mg per day.

Four Foods For Staying Healthy On A Budget

If you spend any time at all in the grocery store, chances are you'll spend a lot of money. Food costs seem to be increasing al the time. In 2008 the Bureau of Labor Statistics said prices were 7.5% higher than in 2007. That was more than two times the rate of medical cost increases. Many couples spend between $150 and $200 per week at the Grocery Store.

Even though food costs more, you don't have to sacrifice nutrition. Experts say there are plenty of low-cost highly nutritious foods, and a few you should put on your next grocery list.

The majority of us have been hit with the budget crunch when trying to balance the cost of food with all the other expenses.

Meals are now planned more carefully than in the past. We check for coupons in the neighborhood paper, flyers, and online looking for discounts and savings. Studies are showing many of us are buying less expensive processed foods in order to save a little money, but this can be unhealthy. Some alternative healthy foods have been identified by scientists and dietitians that can help in balancing our diet as well as the budget.

First consider the tomato. They are low cost all year round and you don’t have to grow them yourself. They are already in the can with extra herbs and spices built in. Researchers at Ohio State have determined that cooking tomatoes concentrates their power to fight diseases like cancer. The lycopene found in tomatoes is a powerful antioxidant, so tomato soup, pastes, or spaghetti sauces are a cheap healthy idea.

Because meat is so expensive we can supplement the tomatoes with beans. They are a great source of protein and much cheaper than steak which is one of the most expensive foods in the store. Meatless chili comes to mind. Something else that gets overlooked in our diet is pinhead or steel oats.

These maintain all of the nutrients from the whole grain oat and are a rich source of soluble fiber, protein, and vitamins, as well as other nutrients like selenium, thiamin, phosphorous, and manganese. These will also lower our cholesterol.

Finally stock up on some cheap, dry pastas, or macaroni and cheese, to make the most of leftovers. Add some broccoli, or leftover meat, and you've got a quick and inexpensive dish.

With all the focus on obesity maybe the silver lining in these economic times is to think about portion control. Not making a meal of each food group on the plate has less calories and will promote weight loss as well as stretching the budget for groceries a little further.

Keep in mind that one portion of meat is about the size of a deck of cards, and fill up on dark greens or other less expensive side items like cooked carrots or potatoes.

Eat More Fruits and Veggies For Stronger Bones

Here is a bit of trivia I ran across this morning. If you eat a lot of protein and cereal grains it causes excess acid production in the body, which could increase calcium excretion and result in weakened bones, and may also lead to osteoporosis.

When we think of taking care of our bones as we age calcium and vitamin D have been stressed, but maybe the acid/base balance of the diet is also important. That is what a new study uncovered. By increasing your alkali levels with a pill or by eating plenty of fruits and vegetables we can strengthen bones.

The study included men and women aged 50 and older who took either a placebo or doses of either potassium bicarbonate, sodium bicarbonate, or potassium chloride for three months. The people who took bicarbonate showed significant reductions in calcium and reduced bone mass.

As we age the diet of many older adults contains more acids but they are less able to excrete the acid. But if we eat more fruits and veggies they add bicarbonate in our system, which is an alkaline compound.

Dr. Bess Dawson-Hughes, of Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, noted in Endocrine Society news that "In this study, we demonstrated that adding alkali in pill form reduced bone resorption and reduced the losses of calcium in the urine over a three month period. This intervention warrants further investigation as a safe and well tolerated supplement to reduce bone loss and fracture risk in older men and women."

Why Are Acai Berries So Famous?

Acai has been used for many generations by the natives of Brazil. This Berry (pronounced a-sigh-ee), looks like a grape or a blueberry, but it’s smaller and darker. It’s a fruit with a large seed and only a little pulp.

Recently it became very popular in the United States among alternative health proponents, and even featured by Oprah Winfry, It can now be found in everything from energy juices to ice cream. Acai has 10 times more antioxidant benefits than grapes and twice as much as blueberries.

NBC's Today did a feature story on acai in 2004, and more recently researchers at the University of Florida tested acai properties and concluded that it destroyed cultured leukemia cells.

What has made it so appealing as a food is its many uses. Not only does it taste good but acai contains nutrients and is naturally rich in Omega fats, amino acids, electrolytes, antioxidants, protein and vitamins A, B1 and E. In addition Acai is low in sugar and used to treat digestion problems, skin irritation, sexual dysfunction, and even insomnia.

Scientists are learning more about the functional power of superfoods, such as the acai berry. Numerous studies support eating foods rich in antioxidants and berries are a key component of a healthy diet promoting weight loss.

Acai is promoted in weight loss products, but few studies have tested the benefit of acai in losing those extra pounds but research continues. The theory is that consuming the Acai Berry in any form makes the movement of food particles in your digestive system very easy and thus the unwanted food particles are eliminated and not absorbed by the body and stored as fat. The fiber also aids in satisfying hunger.

If you have been following the news or the media in general, you know that many celebrities and thousands of others have lost weight on the Pure Acai Berry Weight Loss Diet, in combination with a legitimate Colon Cleanse. These two combined are the latest in diet master plans.

Although the jury is still out on the benefit of acai in losing those extra pounds, and the diet shown on Oprah is pretty costly, there are lower cost combinations that may be worth a try.

A new Acai Berry Weight Loss pill by STG Supplements uses 1200 mg. of Acai Extract along with Magnesium Stearate & Gelatin as a dietary supplement to help shed the extra pounds, and Sculpt and Cleanse by Health Direct is a Colon cleanser that can provide the benefits such as relief from Constipation & Irritable Bowel Syndrome, relief from Gas & Bloating, Weight Loss & Flatter Stomach, Improved Skin, Acne, and Hair, plus relief from: Chronic Fatigue, Diverticulosis, Digestive Problems Acid Reflux, Bad Breath.

Good Morning Sunshine

I saw a health tip on television that mentioned that Vitamin D can be good for your legs. If your level is too low there is an increased risk for Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) or blood clots in the legs. The news item referenced a recent study in New York by the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

The researchers found that being older, female, and nonwhite, having diabetes, a current smoker, and having a higher body mass index were all independently associated with a greater risk of being vitamin D deficient, while greater physical activity, vitamin D supplementation, and evaluating subjects in a non-winter season (greater exposure to sunshine) were all associated with higher levels.

Vitamin D is called the sunshine vitamin. It is naturally produced by the human body when we are in direct sunlight. When we started working indoors and started to wear more clothes when in the sun, it lowered the natural production of vitamin D and caused deficiency diseases.

When it was uncovered that supplements of Vitamin D would prevent or correct some of these diseases, vitamin D was added to the growing list of vital nutrients.

Data indicates that 3 out of 4 people these days do not get enough vitamin D3 in their diet. The daily recommended intake for this vitamin is set to between 400-600 International Units (IU), and it probably too low. Many doctors feel that 1000 IU per day is probably a better number.

One way to get more of this nutrient is to drink three to four glasses of vitamin D milk a day. As a treat for the cold winter months one suggestion is to flavor it with vanilla or chocolate and drink it warm. Another idea would be to go online and choose a vitamin D3 Supplement. This is generally a low cost alternative to a grocery store.

If You Lift ... Here's A Bulge You Can Do Without

Hernias are something you wish would just go away, like an unwanted house guest. If you are wondering what they are, you probably have never had one … and that’s a good thing!

The most common hernia among men happens when part of the intestine pushes through a naturally weakened spot in the groin called the inguinal canal. This canal is where the testicles descend into the scrotum before birth. It usually closes tightly afterward, but sometimes an open space remains.

The strain from continued coughing, lifting heavy objects, being obese or even straining during bowel movements can push the intestine against the inguinal area and result in a hernia.

If you notice a bulge in your groin, this is usually the first sign of trouble. It may appear suddenly or gradually and can extend into the scrotum. You may also have pain or pressure in the groin.

If you can push the bulge back inside your abdomen, it's called a reducible hernia. These hernias aren't immediately dangerous and can be treated temporarily by wearing a support belt, or truss and avoiding strenuous activity. But, you still should see your doctor. Trusses don't cure hernias, and hernias can increase in size.

A bulge you can't push back inside is called an irreducible, or incarcerated, hernia. A hernia like this can become strangulated, lose its blood supply, and require emergency surgery.

Inguinal hernias won't go away on their own, but most of the time a simple outpatient surgical procedure can fix them. A surgeon pushes the bulging intestine back into place and stitches the muscle back together. A synthetic mesh may be used to reinforce the muscular wall in the weak area.

Although you can't prevent the congenital defect that may lead to an inguinal hernia, taking these steps may reduce your risk of having a hernia or a recurrence.

Here are some area’s to concentrate on:

Keep your abdominal muscles strong with moderate exercise.

Try to avoid straining when lifting heavy objects. If you are a lifter, get a spotter, and always use proper lifting
Techniques. If you are working, let your leg muscles do the work and keep the load close to your body.

Maintain a healthy weight, or lose it, if you need to.

Eat high-fiber foods to avoid constipation.

Stop smoking, if you smoke. It can cause coughing. If you cough it increases the risk of having a hernia.
